I'm sure that those in the American market are thankful for the clarification. So... release of the new i-Drive is for limited markets then.

The new iDrive will be available on all new models, such as the F01, F02, F03 7series, the F10 and F11 5series and the F12, F13 6series.

All other (current) models, such as the E60, E60N, E61, E61N, E63, E63N, E64, E64N are only getting the new controller.

As I said before: They only change the plug 'n play mouse!

And: YES! The buttons will work.

It does makes sense.

They don't need two different controllers anymore.

They start using the new one this year allready. So they don't need to have two different ones. All get the same.
Much easier for them.
The buttons will work, so the new MY gets a little improvement.

But not the new iDrive software.

Makes perfect sense. The 09 will have the new iDrive layout;

1. Leather covered controller carried over from 08,
2. Buttons arrayed around the controller that will give direct access to each of the major functions.

It will NOT have the new iDrive interface (screen display).

Buying a new 2009 5 series is like buying a new computer with DOS, while all the other computers have switched to Windows (e.g. 1, 3 and 7 series). This has got to hurt the E60 sales until the F10 comes out.

The people on the boards will know the difference, but will the average BMW buyer know or care? I'm talking about the non-enthusiast average car buyer (ie. suburban husband and wife). The people on this board are but a fraction of the sales that BMW depends upon. On top of that, there're a fair amount of buyers here that will purchased a used E60.

Sales will be affected by economics (ie. household tightening up their budgets and holding onto cars longer) more than the changes to the iDrive.
