I'm not so sure what's "shatteringly expensive" about the LCI.

Depending on the labor charge for the installation of the aero kit for MY07, my 08 550 priced out somewhere between a couple of hundred dollars less to a couple of hundred dollars more than the 07. Oh, and I get 19-inch wheels instead of last year's 18-inchers (a pretty good change for change's sake, IMHO).

I'm not suggesting that the LCI 550 Sport is cheap, but it's certainly no more expensive than last year's model.
Over the last few years 2K to 3K or thereabouts has been added. Not much. But while you can eliminate AS, the sports package is up with comfort seats and the top of line 550 sport now requires the M body stuff and the larger tires. Extra extra. The entry on the top dog is higher and now approaches 70K. My Lord must be the comment from the 04 545ers and some of us, well not me, oldetimers. More options to load up.

Given the fact that many of the "facelift" features are changes for change sake rather than genuine improvements
Are you sure?

There are (averaged across the range) power improvements, improved auto transmission, fuell efficiency improvement (and for the eco warriors, reduced emissions).

Maybe that's why some use "LCI" rather than "Facelift" when describing the new model.

If your going to buy a 535, why not just buy a 335. Smaller with the same engine. The turbo's are probably going to be nice, but then again, I would rather have a 550 v8 then a twin turbo. Why not put the turbo's on the v8?

I find that most of the 5series on the road here are either 525 or 530's. Especially with the 525's, to me it seams people are purchasing the cheapest dick they could afford.

You know I'm an old 04 545er, so I thought a little 04 545 to 08 550 comparison may be interesting . . .

Base price of the 04 was $55,000 vs $58,500 now. If you add the optional lumbar and PDC to the 04 (they're standard in 08), it's $56,100 vs $58,500. If you would have purchased those two things anyway, the price increase is 4% over the four year period. Not so bad, especially considering +35 ponies. And I'm not sure, but I think the auto transmission may have been an extra cost option in 04 (it is now a no cost option).

Premium Sound has actually decreased from $1,800 in 04 to $1,200 now, although it included an optional CD changer in 04 which is now standard (does that pull the base prices even closer?).

CWP, sunshades, fold-downs, rear airbags and rear heated seats pricing has remained the same over the four years.

HUD has increased from $1,000 to $1,200 (all this year I believe) and Nav increased from $1,800 to $1,900 (RTTI = $100?).

And now the real kicker . . . the 04 Sport package, which included Active Steering, cost $3,300. Add Active Steering and the Sport Pack for 08, and you've got $6,000 of options!!!!! I know about the aero package, comfort seats and the 19-inchers, but yes, that is "staggering."

So the moral of the story?? If you can keep your hands off the Sport pack and Active Steering, pricing really is pretty reasonable compared to four years ago. Of course, I can't keep my hands off the Sport pack or Active Steering, so basically, I'm f***ed!

...and entirely different and much improved. And then there's the Sports Auto Transmission to come...

My take is you kind of said, "My Lord!" Rightly so its quite impossible, and irresponsible, for any E60 to take his hands off the Sports Package.

You likely f***d in a good way.

Cheers,

Pha.. That's nothing. My new Touring has $25.000+ of options, and it's not even close to fully loaded.
I know. I was being facetious.

Although we complain because BMW doesn't give us all of the options that everyone else seems to get, US car pricing is really outrageous compared to the rest of the world. Add in our "cheap" fuel, and we get to drive all those really cool BMW V8s (although at comparatively slooooooow speeds!!).

We really are lucky.

The 335 is fun to drive, and is a great car. After driving one, I thought hard about buying it. I decided that it was too small for me. The back seat is tighter in the 335. The front cabin feel of the 5-series vs the 335, plus those wonderful comfort seats, make the driving experience more, well, luxurious. Plus, the 5-ers feel a lot more solid. The 5 series is not as easy to "toss around" as a 335, but the handling is still outstanding. As we all know, nothing drives like a BMW.

I have no idea what I am going to do. Like Hinkley, the pricing does not bother me as I want the ZPP and PDC and Lumbar all of which are no extra on the 550. I also have to have a 6spd so ZSP I guess. What will truly piss me off is the Gaz Guzzler tax which I did not pay on my MY04 545 but saw on the 550s with manual and SMG. Hinkley did you pay it?

However should there be some crazy ass MF on the 550 then I will wait until sept production and consider the 535. I have to drive them both not only to feel the difference in power band but also ride. I hate RFs on Los Angeles' shitty roads. Maybe the M suspension and NON RFs will make a difference.
