2008 550i SP ordered

I felt the same way about the 172 rims from looking at pictures. I still went ahead and ordered a 08 550 sport. I saw them in person on an 08 550 sport that came in recently and they look pretty damn good. But I still like the 166s better so I'm ordering a set and having my dealer put them on as soon as the car comes in. Then I'm going to sell the brand new 172s - they're going for more than new 166s so I'm even going to make a few bucks. You might look into this.

I agree, not a fan of the new wheels - and give me the standard front end while you are at it....

It's funny how intelligent people can agree to disagree . . .
I never really fell in love with my 04 E60 and was somewhat ambivelant about whether I would order a new one or just keep the one I had.
I knew that if I did order again, I absolutely wanted the aero package and 172 wheels. When the LCI was announced with both of those things, as well as a "revised" sport suspention, a short-throw shifter, a better exhaust sound and an upgraded interior, it was like BMW had tapped into my brain and downloaded my ultimate wish list.
I have high hopes for my 550 Sport . . . and I do love those wheels . . .

sell the 172's on the classified section when you get the car. i'm sure there's tons of members here who'll buy them.

Don't forget real M5 (non-thumpflat) tires when you go for those rims.

Thanks jet, that's the plan.
I'm keeping the stock Contis as that's what's recommended for the 550, plus funds are low right now so I don't want to buy a new set of tires - maybe when it's time to replace the Contis.

BOY. I wish I could have waited a couple of more months before getting my new 172's. I could have bought a set from one of you guys.
As someone who has had the 124's for about 2.5 years and just switched to the 172's last week I have to tell you that the 172's look sooooo much better than the 124's did. I have wanted to get the 166's for almost two years now and once came within hours of ordering them (before another expense came up), however, I have to say that the 172's look better to me now and match the E60's lines better than any other wheel (including the 166).
They look very impressive in person. I am as anti-bling as they come, and these wheels are not bling. I think wheels like the old M3 wheels or the current 167's which have a polished or machined surface are more bling than almost all other BMW wheels.
I think most people in the US who don't like the 172's haven't seen them in person and are judging from the pictures (I said MOST, not all). Also, there are many double spoke wheels around but that does not mean that they all look like the old M3 wheels. It's the small details that make a HUGE difference. I never liked the old M3 wheels because of the curved contour of the spokes and the polished finish. The 172's are different from those M3 wheels, as well as other double spoke wheels because the spokes are completely flat and flush with the edge of the rim until the middle area where they go towards the hub in a diagonal line. Also, I prefer the silver finish to the polished or machined finish on the M3's and other wheels.
Of coarse, just like with everything else we all have different tastes. So enjoy whatever wheels you have/like and I will be very happy with my 172's, and very happy about not getting the 166's..............I would have been happier if I could have waited a bit longer and bought somebody's take off 172's for less than what I paid new, but......

I plan on leasing the car so not sure what my options are if I change wheels, I'll have to check with the dealer to see. Hope I don't have to just keep them in my garage for the 3 years of the lease. Anyone have any experience with changing out wheels on a lease.
