2008 535i Oil filter housing CAP leak
 

I recently replaced my oil filter housing cap on my 2008 535i due to it leaking. I than replaced the oil filter and O ring. And im still having the same problem. It leaks out from under the oil filter housing cap and it only leaks on cold starts. Once the engine is warmed up the leak stops. I dont have any other problems just that it leaks out huge amounts on the cold start leaving puddles of oil. I was doing some research and found that the housing may need to be replaced but i have not over tightened it at all. Any other suggestions before i spend $350 on an oil filter housing....?????

Are you absolutely sure the large o-ring on the cap is installed in the right location?

here is the link to the video. I'm positive the O ring is in the right spot. I think it might be under torqued. To my understanding the 2008 535i torque for oil filter housing cap is 19ft-lbs. I didnt use a torque wrench (i will be in the future) but 19 ft-lbs of torque isnt much. Its tightened all the way down, there is no gap between the cap and the oil filter housing.

I recently had this same problem. At first I thought it was my oil filter housing gasket. So I changed it and it was still leaking. Then I noticed the leak was coming from the oil cap.. I changed the filter & O Ring, still leaking. Thought that my cap may be broken, so paid the dealer 75.00 for a new cap. Still Leaking. After hours of intensive research. I found out that my O Ring was placed in the wrong spot.

Funny, this was the first time I changed the oil myself. I put everything back the way I found it. That means the person who did it before (which was a shop), put the O Ring in the wrong spot. Once I placed the ring in the correct spot, haond tightened (n tools involved). My oil leak stopped.
