As Rudy said the bottom panel is just borrowed from the M5 for this prototype. The shifter itself is for an Automatic (Step) with pushbutton Park. Click the link below to see the same thing in the upcoming E70 X5 (it shows how the bottom plate will have a small hole for the shifter to come out of, not a big hole lke the SMG one):

I tried to post the picture here by just providing the URL but it said somthing to the effect that I can't do that to dynamic something or other. I was going to upload the pic to my photo server and then post it here when I got home tonight, but it looks like you uploaded it to E60.net Rudy.....good idea.

By the way....does the X5 steering wheel in this picture look even thicker than the SMG heated steering wheel on the E60? 
It also looks like there are more buttons on the dash than our E60's....perhaps more direct buttons for the radio and the climate control???

My Ride: 535d Auto M Sport delivered 04/10/05, Carbon Black, Beige Ventilated Nasca Leather, Dark Poplar Wood, Media Pack - Sat Nav Pro, Bmw Assist, Bluetooth phone prep + telematics + snap in adapter for Nokia 6230i & 6 CD, Visibility Pack - bi-xenons, adaptive headlights and Headlight Wash, HUD, High Gloss Shadow Line, Extended Lights, HiFi System, Extended Voice, M Spoiler and Heated/ventilated f/seats. Chrome Grills. M Double Spoke 19" Mixed Wheels 172 with 245/35 front and 275/30 rear (Non-runflat continentals) Spare wheel and jack. Supaglass.
It also looks like there's an electronic hand brake like with the A6 rather than the manual one in the E60

My Ride: 2006 550i Sport Package, Cold Weather Package, Premium Sound Package, Comfort Access, Xenon Headlights, Adaptive Headlight Control, Navigation System, Steptronic Transmission. Silver Gray Metallic with Gray Leather. Added Red rear reflectors. Swapped stock Style 124 wheels and Bridgestone run-flat tires for BMW Style 125 5-Double Spoke wheels, 8" x 19" front, 9.5" x 19" rear with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, 245/40YR-19 front and 275/30YR-19 rear.
Looks like more A/C vents on sides. With the weather we have been enduring here, that would be welcomed.
