I took delivery of my car (E60 530i with N53 Engine) in April 2007. It has now done about 27,000 miles.

BMW had just introduced the N53 engine with high pressure piezo injectors (a new technology). A few weeks after taking delivery the first fuel injectors failed. I felt sudden 'misfire' during accelaration and after a while a vibration from the engine. I learnt later that this was the injector failing and one of the cylendars was shutting down.

I took it back to the dealer and they looked at it and said they will replace the injector but will have to wait a few days for the parts to arrive from Germany. When I got the car back, a few days later it happened again. The dealer said another injector had failed and they will replace it. They gave me an equivalent replacement car so I was not too concerned. As long as they fixed the problem.

After I got the car back it failed again for the third time. I then learnt that the injectors had a design problem (from this forum I believe) and they had to get the injectors re-designed. I had to wait a few weeks to get my car back. Then it happened again and I demanded that they replace all the injectors since they had not done that. By this time it was around July 2007.

It has not been just over 3 years since I first took delivery of the car. Just last weekend the noticed the same symptoms, misfire during accelaration and a vibration from the engine (1 cylendar shutting down). When I stop and retart the engine, everything is fine. When I sense the misfire on eccelaration and lift off it avoids the shut down of the cylendar.

My dilema is that the dealer will try to not cover the problem since it has been 3 years (27,000 Miles). Has anyone else had similar problems with the new Piezo injectors and what has been your experience?

Any advice/ideas you have is welcome.

Regards,

Unless you have extended warranty the dealer wont cover the costs. You may get some goodwill from BMW on the costs as you had issues before but I wouldnt be too hopeful on it as its been so long between problems.

Anyone has any experience on how BMW works out the goodwill or how much it costs for replacing a single injector?

I don't know exactly how they work it out but they will only offer goodwill if the car has full BMW service history. You would need to talk to your service guys they will give you a better idea if you would be likely to be eligable.
