2007 550i misfire
Noobie here to the forums and new to owning a BMW- I purchased a 2007 BMW 550i with 115k mi last night from a used car dealership.
When I was driving it off the lot the car drove like a champ, no issues at all with anything, and esp no error codes. This morning (Wednesday) the car started a bit rougher than normal and it threw off a "Service engine soon" light. I got the code checked by Napa and it's giving off a cylinder 2, 3, and 5 misfire. Could it be something drastic going on? Or just a simple replacement of spark plugs, coils, etc? Could the cold weather (30-40~ degrees F) be a factor? Help please! Thank you 😀 |
I would take it back to them unless you got it AS IS. the answer to your question it could be as simple as replacing the plugs and coils or it could be the battery needed charging. Do you know the actual codes.

I would guess worn levers in the valvetronic assembly. Expensive to fix. Take it back to the dealer you bought it from.

Did you get a pre-purchase inspection done? You should definitely pull the coils and plugs and look at them. I started my car up this morning and I didn't have any issues.
|
No pre inspection, so that was a bad move on my end. But I'm getting it checked out Monday at the soonest at a German car specialty shop.
Can I/ would it be "okay" to drive it in the mean time? It doesn't shake at all even at low idle and there's no crazy noises coming from the engine? I was browsing other forums and there's someone that had the same exact issue as me but the SES cleared over a couple weeks and it works fine now. His indie told him the E60 V8s will do that if they've been sitting for too long. |
pull all the spark plugs and check them. If some need to be replaced , replace all of them.
And check the contact points inside each coil pack. They can be cleaned with electrical contact cleaner if they dont appear damaged or worn. |
So the SES light when away (thank God) and she still runs fine. But now she has a small crack in the coolant expansion tank and she leaks coolant like a bitch. The 3 hoses going to the radiator look good but now I need to order a new coolant tank...
