Hey, everyone. I'm in desperate need of some help. About 2 weeks ago I took my car to the dealer for the recall on the battery cables. Everything was fine, and then my car just died. I drove it the night and everything was fine. the next morning when I went to start it... nothing happened. all the lights and electronics worked as usual but there was no crank. when I pushed the start button I heard a faint humming but that's it. i tried to jump it with another car and a jump box to no avail. the indicator on the battery said the it battery wasn't sufficiently charged. When i went to take the battery out to have it charged, i noticed the negative cable was loose. i had the battery checked (good) and charged but im still getting the same results except im getting all types of error codes now. can anyone please help?

humming sound should be your fuel pump. +1 culprit I believe would be your starter. how many miles do you have on the car? we recently replaced a starter on a 530 that had about 84k miles.

And this is why I NEVER EVER let the dealer touch my car. Unless it's a significant warranty repair...which I have none for the past 5 yrs. I never went in for the battery cable recall because I don't want them hooking up my car to their ISIS blocking me out of the picture.

Just had an indy look at it and he said its the starter. He also said the intake manifold had to be replaced because the corrosion on it is what burned out the starter. Does this sound logical or is he running the price up? By the way, it does have 83k on it.

Corrosion on the intake manifold caused the starter to go bad? Did he show you exactly where that corrosion is on the manifold? It doesn't make sense. Find another mechanic and have him replace the starter; your car will be good to go. To replace the starter, intake manifold will need to be unbolted; so, you will need to get a new set of manifold gaskets.
How much is the quote to replace the starter?

He said 800 but it'll be about 650 if I buy my own starter. The dealer quoted me $963. I made a mistake, he said just the gaskets, not the manifold. I haven't seen anything yet. Had my car towed to his shop on Saturday and this was the first time he's looked at it. I work super long hours, so it's hard to just shoot over there. I called another guy, and he quoted around the same thing.

Starter is around $125 (after discounting the core charge) on-line. If you are going to use mechanic to replace the starter, then it may not be wise to buy on-line for 2 reasons - you will have to send the old starter to get the core charge refunded and also the mechanic can't give warranty on the part because you are providing the part.
The job is definitely time consuming because bunch of stuff needs to come out to access the starter bolts. If you have time and the motivation, you can replace the starter; it's not that difficult. It's just time consuming.

I'm getting a Bosch starter from napa for 113. I'm just gonna let him do it. I really don't have the time to do it until Saturday with no wiggle room. Plus, I'm not that mechanically inclined. Thanks to everybody. I'm almost positive you'll be hearing from me again.
