Sometimes when I start my car the first thing in the morning, and place it into reverse the engine will surge by about 500 RPM. It will go vroom..vroom..vroom.. about 10 times. Since I am backing up, I am not hitting the gas. I am holding my brake in and using the idle to propel my car (it's an auto). Since the car is surging, sometimes it is crazy to control. My dealer told me to start the car and let it sit 2 minutes before I drive. It seems like it happens most during a cool day between 40-60f degrees out. Has anyone else had this problem? It happens at random times and my dealer can't get it to do it when I drop it off.

Thanks.

I've not had anything like that happen regardless of the outside temps [almost 100 to under 20 degrees F] and my car is also an '07 530xi. Your dealer should try to recreate the problem on a cold start [means leaving your car overnight]. Alternatively, if you cell phone has video capability, video the tach when you first start the car. You may also be able to capture engine revving too!

My initial diagnosis is a problem in the cold-start system. To properly diagnose the dealer may need to test at the timeof a cold start!

I have never had that problem with my 07 530xi either. My car runs like a champ actually.
