I appreciate the reply Sean, I've looked up the info on how to do this so I'll give it a try. Do you know by chance if the starter was bad would it throw a code to fault memory? I've had a starter go out in my other car and it was obvious to the problem by the sound it made but I read a post here someone had crank, no start, no fault codes, starter sounds normal but the internals were bad. Just a thought.. I'll try the DME - CAS interface sync and let you know what happens.

I did the DME-CAS adjustment and it showed the msg "starting value programming rest was successful.. engine can be started again. I gave it a try and same results it just cranks I can smell the fuel so that part is definitely working. I ran another vehicle test after the failed attempt to start it and I see some new faults coming from the adjustment I just ran. I noticed when I check the DME ecu it shows little detail compared to the other control units, I attached a screen shot I'm just wondering if that's normal or not. When I go back into that service function the options for DME - CAS adjustment and DME - CAS interface are now greyed out, not accessible. I go into the CAS interface to view/ trigger functions and it gives me an error saying data transmission to control unit disturbed. Are there additional steps needed to get everything sync'd or did I F things up more by doing that? I put the foxwell scan tool on to see what it would show and it found no faults other than the drivers airbag stage 1 & 2 and a shorted light bulb. I went into one of the control units and was able to monitor the spark advance as I tried to start the engine so that tells me the DME is sending the signal to the coils right? I have another starter from an old engine I can try but I really think it's an ecu or sensor problem somewhere. If I crank it and the engine pullies are moving does that say the starter is fine?

I've never did anything in ISTA for DME/CAS sync. I've always done in INPA. Right now it looks like there's no communication to the module. I would work in INPA. If it was a sensor issue I would assume it would give a code. You can check the crank sensor to see if it's damaged? If you're smelling fuel then I'd assume you're not getting a spark.

Yes, that's the problem there's no spark. I crawled under the car and removed the crank shaft sensor the plug was soaked in oil I cleaned the contacts with the CRC electrical spray and put it back in. I'm going to throw some money toward a new sensor and replace all 4 cam sensors. This might be a crazy dumb idea, but if I were to pull the plug and coil pack from say cylinder#5, plug it in outside the engine while someone else tries to start it up I'd see spark if it was working right?. I have INPA 5.0.6 installed it recognizes the battery and ignition when the cable is plugged in but that's it. I try to access anything from the menu's I get errors written in German. I installed the Mike's easy BMW tools which is supposed to have an English version of INPA well that didn't work either. I'll rip it out and install it again then see what happens. If anyone can point me to a known good source where I can download the latest version of INPA or even better, the latest SP Daten files for E60 I would be super elated.

Why are you changing the cam sensor. Don't throw parts at it or you'll waste money.

Cam sensor threw a fault code a couple times and I swapped it out with an extra one I had, no further faults from that. I got INPA working I checked the errors and nothing is recorded other than the drivers airbag stage 1 & 2. I went in and checked programming of each control unit and they look fine I didn't attempt to sync DME-CAS or perform any other actions because on the surface according to INPA and ISTA the CAS & DME are ok. The foxwell scanner finds only the airbag faults nothing else, based on the feedback I've received here and looking online that airbag fault wouldn't keep the car from firing up. I exported the INPA scan to pdf but when I try to view the doc the font is micro sized I can't increase it enough to read it maybe someone else knows how to fix that. I recently replaced the passenger side eccentric shaft sensor so I unplugged it and tried to start it still nothing. It sounds like it almost wants to start but won't catch I hear no combustion happening. I ordered a noid test kit to check the plugs and coils as well as a new crank shaft sensor so I'll see where that takes me.
