I stopped by my local dealer today to get an update on when pricing might be available for the 2006 545 (or 550). I was told a few surprising things, some of which I find hard to believe. According to this dealer; 1) There is a serious discussion within BMW regarding whether or NOT there will be an SMG option for the 2006 E60 V8. 2) The 2006 V8 E60 will get more horse power, but will STILL be called a 545. 3) pricing will be available in the fall sometime (this is the only one that I can truly believe).

Any thoughts? Dealer misinformed? Smoking crack? Could the SMG thing possibly be true?

1.) I've heard of also on M5board.com about someone speaking with some head honcho and saying there will not be SMG for regular production cars anymore and only for ///M but I find it hard to believe... I suspect that wont be the case... they're planning on the release of SMG on the E90 3 series in the Fall so i doubt it.

2.) That would be good. well a little better... Then not everyone can tell right off the bat that I'll be driving a car with an expired engine. Either that or it'll save me the purchase of a 330 badge.

3.) Thats right pricing will prob not be released till Sept or earliest Aug. wont be too much more... dont worry.

Can I ask the name of your local dealer?

That rumour came from an interview...
It's just a rumour, not confirmed and will probably not happen.

The new V8 will probably still be badged 545i.
The SMG discussion... it is correct they have discussions abut it, but it doesn't look like they will!

Ya exactlly Like i said... I've heard about it but i dont think that will be the case... I'm sure they will still have SSG (or SMG if you will) for regular production cars.

New V8 with 545 badge is more like it. I like that idea more. keeps current owners happy and new owners will be happy too they will have a new V8.

Why didn't they leave the 745 as 745 to keep the old owners happy??

Probably to help reinforce and differentiate the restyle on the 7. The E60 isn't due for a midlife refresh until another year or two (as I understand it) so perhaps that would be a reason to keep with the current nomenclature.

My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.

Last year when I was ordering my 545i, the dealer told me that BMW wanted to do away with manuals - that the SMG is very popular in Europe and the manual is a thing of the past.

This story does not jive with that, so whats up?

I can't see them doing away with either for a long time.
