Bought my 5 with the gear indicator light on for tranny. Car is still capable of driving and can go up to 60-70 mph seems like it stays on 3rd gear from start till it reaches that velocity. My buddy was able to check for codes it also has a check engine light but the only one I memorized was p0700 which is the code for the tranny. I will find out the check engine light code tomorrow. I'm wondering if there's something else that can affect the tranny Witout it actually being the tranny like computer issue maybe a sensor. Any help would be great thanks

This is called "limp mode" or "safe mode" It will be stuck in 3rd gear the entire time. There is no code you can read that's going to actually give you the reality of the problem besides an actual BMW software but I had this issue a while back in my 3er and it was due to several things MAFS and also blown fuse at the DME. Not necessarily the tranny. The EGS gets its go ahead from the DME. DME will get it's info from air/fuel ratio as well as other factors. First thing is first just check all fuses.
Example:
One time I had a blower resistor "failure" so I went to BMW to get parts. i was still a newb at this point. Anyway while the parts guy was sourcing the part a BMW tech came out and I ask him what else I could check for if this doesn't fix the issue. He said check your fuses, sometimes they need to be reseated. So i paid for part and went in parking lot. Pulled fuse, put it back and problem solved. Well for the next 2 yrs until car was totaled. Anyway waltzed right back in and returned the part. They gave me shit because no return but since I JUST walked out the door and i didn't even open it, they let it slide. ALWAYS CHECK FUSES FIRST!
