It's whenever your car says so or after one year has passed. Your car initially starts off with a 15k interval but it drops down depending on your driving and all.

I concure with your opinion. I am at one year this week and the dealer would not do a "covered change" until I had passed the one year mark. My service indicator indicates it's required at about 12K. I curently have just under 9K on the clock.

I believe the once a year time interval (if you don't meet the service indicator threshold) is due to condensation accumulation and and other factors like acids created from combustion.

The 1st oil change in a new car should be done at 1500,2000,2500 miles 3k at the latest.

Just cause it's a BMW doesn't mean ya can or should wait for 15k miles.

It doesn't matter what car you may have, change the oil at least every 3000 miles!

Otherwise it's like waiting to change your underwear weekly instead of daily!

Or waiting to change your kid's diaper daily instead of frquently.

Actually, though I agree with the desirability of a first oil change at 3k or so, thereafter if using a high-quality full synthetic I believe the 12k interval makes sense. I intend to follow this interval myself, but plan to have oil analysis at intermediate mileages to ensure all the goodies are still active in my oil.

My aim is to get a minimum of 250,000 miles on my new 5er!

So far I've changed the oil at around 12K and 25K, as that is when the car has told me to. The engine runs perfectly, but if changing the oil sooner makes you feel good go for it.

There are many opinions about proper oil change interval... And I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle.

1. your shorts don't have a filter to remove any loose particulate(sp?)
2. I have seen some research(not verified) that syn oils need time to break-in for maximum performance and changing too often is of no bennefit as the oil has not even reached peak operating efficency.

Expensive. $110 Though I am sure it depends on the dealer.

I just bought 7 quarts of BMW 5W-30 oil (about $6.00) each, and the oil filter for about $7.00. Total charge was about $50.00. I will do the oil change myself tomorrow. I save $60 of labor charge..... My car is about 5000 miles. 15k miles to change oil is way too long. Engine oil is engine oil, doesn't matter is BMW or Mobile 1. 5k miles is the right time to change for synthetic oil.

Talk to a Mobil 1 distributor and see if he recommends changing the oil this frequently. He will probably say that this is a waste of money and petroleum. Good synthetics will last 12,000 miles easily in most engines and driving patterns.

I just had my oil & filter changed this week at 2,800 miles. Cost $113--a small price to pay to get the break-in gunk out of the engine--not just to get clean oil, but also a clean filter.

Before synthetic oil, I used to get my oil changed every 3,000 miles. Now with the "15,000 mile" synthetics, I pay for an unscheduled oil change mid-way (tell them not to reset the service indicator), so I have it changed every 7,500 miles.

You may have noticed that the recommended oil change interval (and most other routine maintenance items intervals) have increased in the last few years--just as BMW and other manufacturers have offered free scheduled maintenance (at least in the US). Coincidence...???

All kidding aside, pay the extra $113 once a year or so--clean oil & filter can't be a bad thing.

I use Mobil 1 for many years in my other cars. I always change at 3k miles even though it is synthetic. I need to keep the car for a long time, just like my Escort - 16 years and 200k miles. My Volvo is about 10 years and 140k miles. BMW should at least match up with my Volvo.

A little cost to pay to keep the engine running smooth and quiet.
