Hi Guys,
Need to replace my speakers (along with amp at a later date) as I can't handle how awful they sound anymore!
I think the doors are 4"? But what mounting depth is available?
Anyone done this? Speaker recommendations?
And no, please nobody suggest a mega bucks plug and play system or companies that will do it all for me, also for mega bucks!
Thanks!!

audio upgrades aren't so simple as a speaker replacement for the E60
I've been planning and researching for over a month now. I finally am installing next week during the break.
which audio system do you have? does it have Logic 7? do you have 6" or 8" underseat woofers? centre channel?
first off, the stock 4" speakers are 2ohm so replacing them with most aftermarket speakers will drop volume since they are all 4ohm. you may get a better quality sound from aftermarket but it'll be quieter. The efficiency of the speaker will also greatly affect sound levels with stock amps. planning a speaker upgrade with an amp upgrade is recommended.
given the limiting factor of 4", you are greatly diminished already with the range that speaker can produce. Some of the best quality 3-4" speakers are big bucks. The most popular are Morel, Hybrid Audio's L3 or L3v2 and the Focal components. is your goal like most E60 audiophiles, improving the midbass? that's going to get some amp power and a quality driver for that can play down to 100-300Hz range. Hard to do with a 4" driver.
from what I read you want a 4" speaker that has a max depth of 50mm, you may be able squeeze out a few extra mm's
the used audio market is your friend...so look around various local classified or audio forums. you may get lucky like I did in sourcing my speakers and amps.
I'll have more opinions on upgrading after I install my gear. I'm obviously looking for mid bass, but also, the quality of sound in the upper range (clarity and "air") I'm used to from my home audio system and from my other car that has been upgraded with all aftermarket gear.

I added aftermarket speakers to my 545i a couple of years ago. Had to cut new holes in the front doors to fit the 6.5" drivers. The factory speaker locations are pretty small. You will be limited on your speaker choices if you use only the factory speaker locations.
