2004 e60 545i low oil pressure sensor?
So I keep getting the low oil pressure warning as I drive and I'm hoping it's just the sensor.
I had this problem a couple months back but at that time the warning would stay on. I took it to a dealership and they said my oil pressure was fine and it was probably just a sensor. Turned out I got some water in my dme container and it killed it sk that was a whole other story. Anyways now whenever I drive for over 20 minuts I'll get the low oil pressure warning but it'll shut off after about 10-15 seconds. Then as I drive it'll come back after random intervals, some times 10 minutes some times 40. It always shuts off after 10 or 15 seconds though. Now I do have a small oil leak but I got it checked out and they said it's such a small leak that it really isn't much of a problem, but I do notice that the place where the oil pressure switch is located seems to be covered in old oil. Could the problem be that the oil is leaking into the switch and making it go off? Also some more info I parked my car for the winter so it sat for 4-5 months. I got an oil change right after I started driving it again, about 200 miles ago. Is it possible Ive got a little sludge built up that is cycling through and getting got or stuck and causing this? Should I get the engine flushed? Is it just the sensor? Or is it something more major? Can I keep driving it? I'm also wondering if it could be the oil pump starting to go. Like could it be sputtering and then kick back in? |
change the sensor. its easy to do and you can buy at local parts store.
its mounted on front of engine towards passenger side, under the vacuum pump. |
Yep, the pressure sensors fail all the time. Usually the sign is oil in the connector or leaking profusely. I keep an extra on hand at all times as I have two cars with the N62 engine.
