2004 E60 535d - Knocking Noise From the Front @ Low Speed
Hi,
I have had a knocking noise at the front for the past few weeks, and gradually it has been getting worse.
I had it into a mechanic who has checked all the bushings, arms etc and they are all fine. Also got him to swap out the sway bar links as I read they can appear and test fine, and still be shot.
Still knocking.
A brief overview of the noise:
I also notice a really bad vibration through the steering wheel when braking hard from 60+ mph - but only when braking hard and only over 60mph.
Front tyres have plenty of tread.
Car does not tramline
Discs / Pads look in good condition (although I suppose visually and mechanically may be different)
Has an Ebiach front anti roll bar kit on, and top strut brace is nice and tight at both the firewall and the strut mounts.
Anybody any advice on direction to look?

A brief overview of the noise:
- Occurs only when the vehcile has 'warmed' up so to speak. Does not happen for the first few miles or a journey, or when the outside temp is below 25 degrees and it hasnt gone more than a mile or two
- The noise sounds like its really bad. Making a really bad rattle/knocking noise when going below 20mph and turning
- Turning the wheels does not affect the noise. The noise does not get better nor worse
- Braking seems to make the noise less - But that could just be because you are scrubbing speed of faster
- I have checked, and have had others check, and this noise can be very loud inside, but cannot be heard at all from outside
- All suspension components seem OK (Has bilstein b16's if that makes a difference?)

Can't think of any temp dependent knocking. You say it happens when the car is turning but turning the wheel does not affect it.
Maybe engine mounts?. At the very least try another mechanic, maybe a BMW specific one if the one you tried isn't.

Drove home from work the last two nights and its been significantly colder outside (13c as apposed to 23c the previous 2 weeks) and the noise is not there anymore.
I think its maybe the heat shield from between the turbos and the drivers (UK) wheel well.
Investigation under way! lol
