My Ride: 2006 BMW M5
Thumbs up

I am thinking to swap the engine (my 2004 (built March 2004) engine has 128000 km / 77000 miles on and is ticking) for a 2005 one (with 7000 miles on, used and in great condition. for $us 5900) Yes, with 2 year warranty.

My question is will this fit? or must be with the same year?

i don't know the exact answer. I don't see why it would not fit.

but why are you changing at 77k miles?
just curious. or just for the warranty reason etc?

Should be fine - so long as you're not trying to go from the 4.4 to the 4.8 (550i engine), it should be relatively 'plug-n-play'. But wow though - $5900 for an engine with only 7k on it? I'd buy that bastard, wrap and garage it til I run the hell outta the 77K engine. Install and have a nearly new 5er again (at least as far as power is concerned).

there are few 4.4 (545i - 04 and 05) engines on sale in the market.

There are:

2005 Engine $5200 with 17K miles (Florida, 1 year warranty)
2005 Engine $6500 with 21K miles (Illinois, 2 years)
2005 Engine $7500 with 7K miles (Michigan, 2 years)
2005 Engine $5900 with 7K miles (Illinois, 2 years) <--- I like that choice but I wonder why it is more cheap.

Obviously they are from different stores

Two things: over mileage and ticking noise

Ticking noise and over mileage (no warranty)

where are you finding these engines? just curious.

Also because you have an engine ticking you are getting a new engine?
couldn't you resolve this for less than 5.9k ?

good luck man.
