He felt an 18" has to push more snow out of the way than a 17" inch wheel but a premimum snow tire would not be a problem in either size. In addition, if snow in your area is not a regular occurance the 18" look better and handle just fine.

My Ride: 2007 E61 M5, 1989 Z1
I chose to buy a set of new take-off OEM 17 wheels for ?150/$300 and fit 225/50 17 Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes. This saves the 18s from the inevitable nicks and scratches from tyre removals and installs and the smaller wheels and tyres are cheaper to replace if they suffer any damage.
