Thumbs up

Oh the perils of low profiles

I was heading home this evening with my 2 yr old in the back, decided to take a country road to let her see the sunset, I've driven this particular road many many times, sadly this time whilst center of the country lane I hit a rock of some description, I was doing no more than 30mph at the time and to my horror look at the damage.

My Front wheel does not look damaged and i had to drive around 10 miles on flat rubber, I'm amazed at that, my rear however as you can see in the image has a bit of a dent on the rim. I only had my rear tyres done a few weeks ago so i'm in for ?230 there and a further ?215 for the front, I'll probably replace both fronts though to keep tread wear even total so far ?660... I'm not sure if there is any suspension damage and wont know till it has been checked, if the rear rim cant be repaired it will be another few hundred pounds, I could be looking at ?1000 +.

My little girl and I are safe though which is the main thing.

Any advice on whether the rim is repairable based on the images below will be greatly recieved.

Those space savers look bloody hidious dontcha think

I was just thinking the same thing, 3 posts about 172 mishaps, wow. Glad to hear you and your daughter are safe. The way the pics look it would seems you would be able to get the wheel repaired. I've seem worse that have been repaired. Best way to find out would probablly be to take the tire off and check and see if the integrity of the wheel has been compromised. If not, should be able to sand, fill, color match, and clear coat it. Good luck with your repairs. Again, glad to hear you and your daughter are alright.

Absolutely gutted for you! I know the feeling of damaging these wheels (you've seen my thread). Think your wheel will be repairable from the picture. Trouble is how good it can be finished (if mine are anything to go on) - I'm dreading picking mine up tomorrow, it's as simple as this - if they arn't 'as new' I won't accept them.

Good luck in getting yours sorted - let us know the outcome.

Sorry for your misfortune. Based on the photos, the rim looks to be sufficiently intact to effect a repair. Of course, a specialist will be able to check the integrity of the entire wheel as cracks may have occurred elsewhere. However, compared to some repairs I've seen before, this does not appear too serious, relatively speaking. Best of luck.

Thanks for the feedback folks... it's now the morning after and i'm now contemplating the logistics of moving the car or keeping it here and opting for mobile repairs and tyre fitting, I'll update in the next day or so.

I'm a little less concerned now that a few people are telling me the wheel looks repairable, fortunatly this rim was slightly scuffed before so a good as new repair will hopefully bring it back to a reasonable finish.

My first service is due too so as i'm writing i may just roll it slowly the few miles to the dealer ...............

UPDATE: I nursed the car to the dealer this morning, It will be there at least two days, the list of work is as follows......
Front & Rear nearside repairs on the 172's
One replacement Conti Sport Contact 2 Rear
I opted to replace both front Conti's to keep the wear even
Also having the first service done which was due in two weeks anyways

I'm reckoning a bill of around ?1500 maybe more, right now i want to just punch something, the stretch of road it happened on is out in the middle of nowhere, there is a slow down sign for the little stream where the incident occured, now I guess 20 - 30 mph was not slow enough, i should probably be punching myself I can't help but thinking most other tyre/wheel combo's would have made it through, whilst at the dealer this morning I noted the M3's in the show room have at least twice the height on the sidewalls as i have on mine.

I know i've not been to complimentary about my local dealer in the past but thus far they have slotted my car in for all the work and given me a 57 plate 320d touring to drive whilst my e60 is being repaired.

Anyway i live and learn, oh and my daughter got to see a lovely sunset

Good ending to a sad story - it's important to put things into perspective... (Although I would have felt the same as you described earlier )
