17" or 18" winter tires?
#1
Winter is around the corner for me and wanted to get a head start and invest in Winter tires now. I am looking at getting either 17 or 18 inch rims. From a safety point of view is smaller better?
The main reason I want to go with 17's is I wanted to save the extra cash to invest in new summer tires next year and replace my stock with 19's.
Any advice?
Thanks!

I've had both sizes, and would go again with the 18"s.
With the correct tyre size (245/40R18), there is enough sidewall to protect the rim. The only little con is that the 225/50R17 size had just a little better grip on startoffs, due to the 20mm narrower tyre. All my winter tyres have been studded.

As a fellow cold climate dweller,I have been going with 17.You want to save cash and have better traction, both accomplished with the smaller tires

My Ride: 550i M SPORT - 6 SPEED MANUAL
I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and we have a winter here! Let me tell you! I have a 2008 550i MSPORT 6 SPEED with 19inch stock wheels and I went ahead and got 225/50/17s for the winter. Pirelli Winter Carving Edges with studs. I find a narrower tire = better grip.

Slightly narrower tires provide better traction, turning and braking in winter. I run on Michelin X-Ice and love them. Quiet, long wearing and do the job.

How big is your budget?? I just dicided to go with 18" x 8" and 235/40 tires. Bought all new rims and tires for 11000 swedish kronor...
My first plan was to get some Style 135 from "blocket.se" but they are hard to get hold off... 17" just looks to small for our big cars and i want my car too look good during the 4-5 dark months we have to roll on wintertires...
They are going on next week...

I was shooting around 14k kr and those are for the 17" tires when I go 18" the price goes up to 18k kr. Where did you get yours at 11k? I am checking out tires at http://www.bythjul.com
