If you have service records indicating your car was maintained according to BMW's recommendations I feel you would have a reasonable position for BMW NA to offset the cost of repair or replacement. Certainly even a 6 year old BMW engine with regular care should not have scored cylinders at this low mileage. I suspect that there was a mechanical failure that caused it. And unless they can point to something you did to cause extraordinary and accelerated wear BMWNA should help you out.

i wouldnt fix it. unless ur planing to keep the car for another 5-10 years. considering the depreciation and the carrying value.
its all depend... i think..
if you plan to keep it for a long time, maybe consider to get a scrap e60 for other parts also..
good luck.! ! !

They probably don't even want to do the work since they gave you an astronomical quote like that. How would they expect somebody to actually pay that out of their pockets?

Damn, sucks to hear another story like this about a 545i engine. ![](https://5series.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/crying.gif)
You should definitely have an independent mechanic look into it as 16k is outrageous! I have 58K on my car... time to sell already?

Please let us know how this turns out!

if i were you, i would just try to sell the car as is. List it on ebay or something stating whats wrong with it(mechanical problem). Im sure someone(car dealer) will buy it that knows how to get it repaired for cheap. This way you wont have to put any money into it and you could sell it for a small loss. i think this is the best way to go

I've ran across this website while looking for different parts: http://www.bmrparts.com/index.htm
Maybe buying a rebuilt engine and having an independent shop do the work could save a lot of $$$.
