no no Rick, I agree with you. I have nothing against 16" I was not talking about size. I was reffering to people having 100K $ cars with black steel wheels
I totaly agree that the best winter tire is a must. It is ridiculous to save money on tires.

. In fact i prefer them to others like the 115, 116, 125, 71, 50, etc and most of the 19'' and 20'' "tuning" ones i see around... It is down to personal taste...Btw: There are no steel wheels in 5 series. At least here.

oh boy, again, I have nothing about 16" OEM wheel winter setup. That is great.
I'm talking about what I constantly see around myself..... black heavy steel wheels on Audi A8....A6... MB E....
And yes you can get classic steel wheel on BMW. There is one E60 in the city and the guy has the worst cheapest 5$ plastic covers from gas station over those steel wheel. Terrible look.
I have to take pictures for you guys. What a shame.
this is what I'm talking about
 I've seen this on E60....... I've got to take a picture.........
the steel wheel

It's funny, but when you get used to cold weather it's not a problem, if it is not windy.
The windchill factor kills!
But the the answer to your question is:
To make this such a great Forum every memeber has to put some effort into it!
And pics we love.

I reluctantly just purchased some 138s and some Dunlop M3s for my car for the winter. I was really thinking about getting another set of 124s and putting 18" snows on it -but the fact is, the skinnier the tire the better it does in the snow and the smaller the wheel the more sidewall you have to absorb those nasty winter potholes.
Of note, if you have a 545/550, 17" is the smallest you can go.

And for actual winter use this size is recommended.
Overhere we have a winter time speed limit of 100 km/h (62 mph).
When travelling on freeways I usually set the cruise speed at 119 km/h (75 mph).
At overtaking in good conditions the speed very seldom exceeds 160 km/h (100 mph).
Ag. the ContiVikingContact3 tires come at 225/55 R 16 Q, where the Q
stands for speeds at 160 km/h (constant speed).
In summertime the tire choice goes for sport, comfort and good looks
but in the wintertime one must appreciate safty and staying alive!
