I'm sitting at work right now, contemplating the ride home. I've got 1198 miles on the odometer, and my patience will soon no longer be required.

I'll report back.

Yeah, gradually... over the course of how many miles? This was the same advice given for my last two cars, and I generally don't floor it and redline my new cars the second the odometer hits 1200. It will most likely happen sometime today though.

I have a sense that the engine has been broken in for some time now. Like anything else, BMW builds in padding to these numbers. Even so, I plan on easing the RPMs up gradually to let the engine get used to it.

Let her rip UU...I know you've been itching to, and that is one of the reasons we buy BMW, we know the car is built for it and can handle it. In your report back, make sure you focus on how good it felt to just let loose...euphoria comes to mind!

I was conservative and spent the next 800 miles working it up to full red line and rapid acceleration, by doing some speed runs on the freeway in lower gears to run it gradually up over 4k. You can have alot of fun doing some speed runs up at 5-6k before the 0-60 romp. Not sure if it really matters but I figured another couple of weeks for the life of the car was worth it.

Yeah, I'm not sure I could do that practically - even with the 4,500 RPM constraint, I'm getting up to 85+ MPH during my commute. Also, the timing and lift of the intake valves will be changing with more throttle depression (valvetronic), so I think I need to increase not just absolute RPM, but the throttle position as well to complete the break-in. All this points to more aggressive driving.

EDIT - Oh nos! It just started raining. Oh well, I guess this combined with the traffic that will ensue will help dictate my behavior.

Still not fully unleashed.

I took it a little over 5K yesterday after work, and I actually floored it mid-acceleration after running through the toll booth this morning in 3rd gear, running it up to 5K. I still haven't dogged it in the lower gears yet.

It's raining like crazy here today, so I didn't want to push my luck, but this engine seems to really get a lot stronger the higher it revs, so we'll see what the next few days bring when I get up to redline.

I looked again at the white hash marks on the tach. When the car is started, there are hash marks between 6K and the 7K RPM redline. When it is fully warmed up, three white hashes remain, which covers about 500 RPM. Basically, the hash marks never dissappear from 6750 RPM onward.

Oh, and I'm still at 24.2MPG... -average-.

Heh, I like that avatar.

I got it up to 6750 RPM this morning in second gear after going through a toll gate. I ran through the rest of the gears pretty quickly and was doing 90 before I knew it. Man, this thing is fast. You don't even really realize because it's so smooth and effortless. No first gear flogging yet, and I haven't played with the DTC/DSC settings yet. I'm sure this will alter its behavior during shifts (wheelspin).

UUronL:

I must be right down the road from you....my office is @ the corner of the Toll Road and Fairfax County Parkway. If I see a grey streak zoomin' on 267, I'll assume its you!

My '06 530 6 speed is due into Passport on Saturday!

Cheers,

OnOn
