10 years & counting - 545i
Hello, time for an update. 10 years ago this week I purchased a 2004 545i. I got the 6-speed manual, sports package, Logic 7 & window shades - $61k. My car was the first 6-speed available in Southern California. I bought it from a dealer 200 miles from home. I have attached a couple pictures that show what an early build it was. The doors don't have the same wood as the dash - some kind of metal (?) inserts. The dash doesn't have the wood around the "storage slot". I had black, not body color matching inserts on the back bumper. Those red inserts and Michelin Pilot Sports were my only "mods". the runflats stunk. When I needed them, hit a huge pothole, they didn't work. Drove 365 mile on the "donut" spare - worked great. The car has been wonderful and still runs great. Everything works, still handles and feels tight after 90k miles. I was worried about all the electronics but after a few software updates I have had no problems. I have doubled BMW's maintenance schedule, or cut in half the # of miles between oil & fluid changes. I have replaced the "lifetime" transmission fluids. I have owned many BMWs, still have two others I bought new - 1988 325 & 1995 525i - both manuals. The 545i hasn't quit earned the "I will never sell it" status of the other two - but maybe after another five years, perhaps. I will let you know.
