I am at 15 months and 40k miles and I got a stress fracture starting bottom left of the windscreen, BMW replaced it.

I have HUD too.

I am either a rock magnet or the windshield with HUD has a design flaw. I just ordered my 4th replacement windshield in ten months of ownership, which will make 5 windshields in my car including the one that came with it.

Has anyone else with HUD had an unusual amount of cracked windshields?

One of the breaks would have broken any windshield, as the rock that hit it almost went through...sort of an exaggeration, but it was huge and left a hole, glass dust and chips on the exterior of the glass.

Let me know if your HUD windshield seems too crack to easily. This is getting rediculous.

Thanks
Not a design flaw...

Mine was whisteling, so they had to get it out and glue it back in correctly, but it remained the original windshield.
Then I was doing 230 Km/h on the Autobahn and a car moving out of my lane left a little stone flying towards my windshield, and even thogh it was at highspeeds, I was able to repair the point of impact.
And finally a lady was overtaking me when she decided to exit the Autobahn, but the exit was just 100 metres ahead, and we were doing about 120 Km/h. She moved right in front of me without looking and a stone hit my windshield, leaving two small impacts, they were repaired too.

With a design flaw, the windshield would have been broken twice, but I still have the original one.

Nine months and 23,000 miles for me. I've had one rock chip repaired and no cracked glass so far with HUD.

Excuse me while I go knock on some wood.
Please let me know how that chip was repaired. I have a small (< 1 mm) chip on my windshield and no one seems to be willing or able to fix it.

Perhaps two-plus reasons:
1. Rocks --Following too closely; stop pushing those slowpokes.

2. Structural tension is not accurately maintained due to faulty welding/matching of body structure but in these days of laser robots, that seems highly unlikely.

3. Quite possibly a combo of 1 and 2, with surface being already structually over-stressed, and then a small rock becoming the provberbial straw on the camel's back.

All speculation on my part, but here is my welding tale:

When new, my Moto Guzzi's rear end started clunking, then finally began seizing up after a moderately long ride. It would release after cooling down. We narrowed it down to the drive shaft carrier bearing. After replacing 3 of them, MG replaced the swing arm. Apparently it had been set wrong in the jig or however one gets tube allignments off by a mm or two. It would stress the shaft and bearing until the bearing failed. Looking at it, (except for the scorched paint where the bearing was housed) you couldn't see any difference.

I assume you have kept your dealer apprised of this...

Good luck,
Ray Hull

GO through your insurance, thats what I did to fix the chip on my MY2001 330ci. They came to the house for the repair and it didn't cost me anything. The only thing I didn't like is you have to sign a waiver that if the chip grows they are not resonsible. A short time later the chip came back and the insurance replaced the windshield with a OEM one with the rain sensor. I had to pay the $100.00 deductible.
Good luck
cheers

There are windshield chip repair specialist that will come to your location and put some sort of acrylic type bond in the chip...applied with heat that is very effective at keeping a chip from becoming a running crack. It does a great job of making the chip almost invisible. My problem is that the crack has showed up almost immediately after the impact.

I must not be living right. Got the new windshield today. Driving home at 65 mph in traffic, a rock comes flying up and CLACK!! Thankfully there is no star or crack, yet, just two small pits. Made if 5 hours wih no rock ping. Damn. I may start a rock collection.

Someone said it, maybe I should stop pushing slower traffic. Why do slow people drive in the left hand lane anyway?

I have a spider crack that was repaired same day as fracture. About 3/4" diameter almost behind dead center rear view mirror. Scared the crap out of me when it hit...

My windshield after 22K miles is fairly pitted.. something to do with 21 mi. each way to the office on 5 FWY between 56 Fwy daily. Lots of construction, s__t seems to fly everywhere..

Something tells me that the replacement windshields are not of the same quality as the original one. Attached are pics of a co-workers 325ix - rock came off a truck going the opposite direction, bounced and came right in through the front windshield - ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. Fortunately it was traveling at an angle. Note the damage to the passenger's seat.
