I am either a rock magnet or the windshield with HUD has a design flaw. I just ordered my 4th replacement windshield in ten months of ownership, which will make 5 windshields in my car including the one that came with it.

Has anyone else with HUD had an unusual amount of cracked windshields?

One of the breaks would have broken any windshield, as the rock that hit it almost went through...sort of an exaggeration, but it was huge and left a hole, glass dust and chips on the exterior of the glass.

Let me know if your HUD windshield seems to crack too easily. This is getting rediculous.

Thanks

Nine months and 23,000 miles for me. I've had one rock chip repaired and no cracked glass so far with HUD.

Excuse me while I go knock on some wood.

I have 15,000 + with HUD and no problems so far. This subject about BMW cracked windshields was discussed in great lenth on one of the other sites because BMW windshields crack very easy as compared to other car makes. The general conclusion was personal driving habits, following,(tail gating), to close to the vehicle in front of you primarily larger trucks on the highways that are not kept very clean. I guess with all the windshield replacements that you have done you must know by now to stay with only OEM windshields and not having any other problems come up.
cheers

I do not have a HUD Windshield and have already replaced one with many tiny stone chips on my current one. I am not so sure that driving habits are to blame, of course following close behind truck will not help, however I think that everyone will agree that these windshields are indeed made of a very soft glass.

29k miles, no HUD, 3rd windscreen

There have been a few reports about tension fractures, usually coming from the left bottom corner of the screen (looking at it from inside)

At least I now have a climate comfort screen, I didn't have before

Other than the hole mentioned in my original post, all off my replacements were necessary due to a stone hit resulting in a 12 to 24 inch crack shortly thereafter. The latest one did not even have a noticable chip. The stone hit the edge where it is black. I heard it hit, but did not notice any damage at all. A week later, I go out to my car that morning and there is this 12 inch crack.

markt540i:

I have basically the same history as You - 3 changed ws due to long cracks and now up for a change again ( due to stone chip, on left side ofcourse!). 2 on my 545 and now 2 on my M5. Both with HUD.

IMO - these cars a very crack sensitive!
