As a prefatory note . . . . when I purchased my CPO E60 in late January of this year, my daughter insisted that the E-60 have a name bestowed upon her. It has become a bit of a family tradition for the last several vehicles we've owned or leased to be christened with a name, all compliments of our clever daughter. By way of example . . . .

My 2003 Volvo S-60 2.5 AWD was named "Abbie" for the 70's super group ABBA who hailed from Sweden just like the Volvo;
Our 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan was named "Mimmy" (a take on "mini");
My 2006 Chrysler 300 was named "Hondo;" (short for Three Hondo, of course with Hondo being slang for hundred);
My wife's Chrysler Pacifica is named "Ping" (for the pinging sound emanating from the dual exhaust whenever the vehicle is turned off (regardless of whether the car had been on a 5 mile jaunt or a 150 mile drive); and

My CPO E-60 was purchased back in January of this year, so the day I brought the E-60 home, my daughter determined that the car would be named "Beamy." She insists that Beamy is a masculine name . I politely corrected her and pointed out that much like boats and ships and other items of beauty, are given feminine names, so while I was okay with the name "Beamy" for the E-60, she had to agree that Beamy was a female.

So anyway, back to the purpose of my post, I had to take a midweek trip (Thursday) to Pittsburgh (from metropolitan Detroit) to check in on my folks, as my mother had a surgical procedure earlier in the week. I've been traveling between MI and PA for > 27 years now, and I have found that the best way to avoid close encounters with the Ohio Highway Patrol, is to set the cruise at 73 MPH (max posted speeds are 65 MPH on the Ohio Turnpike).

I left my home in Metro Detroit promptly at 5 AM on 9/24 and made the 310 mile trip in 4'20" all the while attaining 31.3 MPG. I spent the day with my folks and it was evident that her recovery was going well, and all I was going to do was get in the way, so I decided to head back to Michigan late Friday morning.

I left at 11:30 and had a similarly enjoyable trip back home, however, due to a few spots of construction and hitting some rush hour traffic on the Southfield Freeway, my trip took longer (4'45"), but my mileage had improved to 33.1 (which included my "standard" 95-100 MPH 3.0 mile uphill haul from the Cuyahoga River bridge on the turnpike).

Saturday and Sunday I had to convey my daughter to a softball tournament in Jackson, MI (150 mile round tripper/day). Average speeds on those trips were around 80 MPH, with periods of speed in excess of 95 whenever warranted.

In all circumstances Beamy performed flawlessly, as she is just about to eclipse the 50,000 mile mark to coincide with her September 30, 2006 in service date. Even with the higher speeds to and from Jackson, MI, Beamy still averaged 30.5 MPG.

Thank you "Beamy," may you continue to provide me with years and miles of smiles.

It's nice to hear something positive. I'm sure your daughter will remember everything well into the future. Also, that gas mileage is great. I used to get numbers a bit over 30mpg before I switched to wider tires.

Sounds like fun. Wow, the 530xi really gets much better gas mileage than my 550. On pure highway trips, I have never gotten more than 23 mpg (I certainly didn't expect more with a big honking V8 but I am surprised that the 530xi can break 30 mpg).

I only wish I had the time for a 3K road trip in my 550. That would be so much fun.
