09 528i sedan - Trunk won't open (button, fob, or handle)
The trunk does not open via the key fob, button near the driver's foot rest, nor when pressing the padded handle on the trunk itself. Will only manually open when I remove the small blade key out of the fob, insert it upside down and turn counter clockwise.
I replaced the cell battery in the keyfob thinking it's an alarm feature but no dice. I can't hear the small motor/release mechanism I usually hear when the trunk opens. I searched several threads but only saw "tailgate" boot problems from back in 2016 - 2018.
Any suggestions or where to look? Fuses look fine but can replace if needed.

I concur; it's definitely sounds like the well-known wire loom where it goes through from the trunk into the trunk lid. Do a search and you'll find lots of info on it. basically you're going to need to remove the fiber panel on the inside of the trunk lid and release the look so you can splice and repair the broken wires at the point they enter into the trunk lid. Be patient and methodical and you'll have it fixed in no time.

Yep, I had to butt-splice 2 wires. By no surprise, the breaks were right in that bend section. I just found my thread, Repair Trunk Wiring Loom - 5Series.net - Forums.

Finally got a chance to tackle this. I removed the rubber pointy grommet thing, unraveled the sticky (hands are still sticky) cloth tape (13 year adhesive really bonds to your hands/fingers), and noticed a solid yellow wire was completely cut. a gray and yellow that sheath was cut and bent, and a light gray cable was also unsheathed and exposing the wire. I went ahead and removed the black fuzzy cardboard thing on the trunk itself and checked the wires, wire looms and connections to the trunk release button, trunk release mechanism and light and all seem good/well.
The culprit is the cut and exposed wires. I'll butt crimp them, extend the wire about 2 - 3 inches and then wrap everything in electrical tape. Not putting the rubber grommet thing back in.
Thanks for everyone's help.

I ended up soldering the cut wire and wrapped it well in heat shrink. The other wires weren't too bad, so just some electrical tape to cover them and I wrapped all wires in a loom of electrical tape. Problem solved!
