Default 08, E61 steam from right rear corner of hood when stopped at a light

As mentioned in the way to long title. I’ve added coolant one time since I purchased the car in September of 22. Last week I noticed a slight smell of coolant and a little steam rising from the passenger corner of the hood. I got a low coolant message then. Now a week and maybe a half later a low coolant indication again. The expansion tank looks dry on the outside no residue, just dry dust like the rest of the area. I don’t have easy access to the bottom but there’s no fluid in the garage floor. Where should I be looking, I’ve heard the expansion tank is print to cracking and the steam seems to be coming from that area.

I found the leak. It’s on the passenger side low down on the engine in the area of the rear turbo charger. The water is leaking onto a hot pipe and evaporating. I tried to get a video but lighting just wasn’t right.

Sounds like the tank or hose. Most likely the tank. You usually need to get a mirror down there and bounce a light off of it to see.

The tank is forward and the leak is to the rear of the engine. I have a bore scope but it’s too hot right now to go down there. At least I know why I’m not seeing any puddles!

Leaks can travel front to back or side to side which makes them tricky.

Had the same exact problem, what it was is the coolant tank or cap wasn’t holding proper pressure and the coolant was boiling. When this happens there is a little hole/channel on the tank near the coolant cap that dumps over flow coolant under the coolant tank which then goes right on top of the turbos.

Take a flash light and look under and behind the coolant tank you will see coolant if this is the cause.
