I only have a cheap 20$ one off Amazon. It helped when i got a check engine light and told me the engine was running too rich so I cleaned the MAF and it fixed it.

There have been a number of others on here who have had the passenger side ground strap fail. Sounds like you have isolated it to the starter but may be worth a shot connecting a jumper cable from the ground post on the driver side strut tower to a solid piece of metal on the engine block and try starting.

Code readers - Carly makes a bluetooth dongle which fits in the OBD port - very convenient with a smartphone, subscription fees to use the app vary (and can get expensive). Works well, also allows you to read live data. Foxwell makes a handheld device - NT510 series - available on Amazon and other sources - works well, a bit more clunky to use. Finally - INPA software running on a laptop with a USB to OBD port cable - probably the most time consuming to set up but once you get it working and find your way around, it gives you lots of options for resetting adaptations, etc. There are tons of forums and posts dedicated to this - check them out. I started out with INPA on a laptop (still works). Then I moved to Carly for convenience and easier tracking of live data and logging when driving. Then I had to get the Foxwell to be able to reset the transfer case and transmission oil changes - something not supported by Carly.

Agree that you should get Carly for BMW as it can register batteries and much more, and much easier to use than all the BMW diagnostic software. Well worth the $60 odd bucks it costs per year IMHO.

UPDATE
I put in the new starter and bought Carly. The new starter made a single rev and then nothing. I put Carly in to read any codes that came up and here is what I’ve got.
