Last month, this message came up on the screen: Restraint System Malfunction. I took it to the dealer and they claimed, with the inspection, that the problem is the BST cable needs to be replaced. I have read some of the discussion here. But I am still confused. Because I have opened the battery parts and examed the cable, it seems to me, the terminal of that BST cable is fine.
What I want to know are, first, is the result which the dealer told me is legitimate? and, if there a cheap way to fix this problem?
Now I just want to sell this car...it keeps having minor problems, it is so annoying.
I know that there are stores selling this cable. But I don't know if I can install it myself. The dealer charges $800 for the labor...it is just pure evil.....

This discussion has been my reference: https://5series.net/forums/topic/992...fety-terminal/

In additon, I found that there is water in where the battery located. A lot of water, in fact. I couldn't find a way to get it out...it is a complete close space at the bottom. How the hell did that happen?! Is that safe? it's like the battery floating in water!

Thank you guys.

I have the same kind of terminal as this one: they are from Gilgorm's post

Water in the trunk seems to be a somewhat common issue on the E60 models. It causes all kinds of electronic issues. It didn't sound like it from your post, but hopefully you have already gotten the water out.

Man, how and where are the water getting in? I have seen a few posts about this, but it's never really mentioned nor investigated to where exactly is leaking water.

I don't have this particular problem at all with water, but I am very very curious.

So there is no one can fix the water leaking problem...?

How about the BST cable? Did anyone solve that himself?

If I remember right, from all the other threads, the water in the trunks was caused by clogged sunroof drains. There was also an SIB for it.

Search google with "bmw e60 sunroof drain clog sib" to read through some of the threads.

@ProMed, I do see a small crack on the seal on the sunroof. I guess I can use some glue on it to stop the rain leaking?

However, the "Restraint System Malfunction" is still my biggest concern...Really hope someone can give me a hint on that...

Everyone~ Anyone?

Where are you located? I might be willing to take a look for you

What was the conclusion?

Update:
So this is the conclusion the dealer gave me after a $125 inspection. I tried to fix the water leaking by sealing the crack on sunroof rubber frame, but there is still a small amount of leaking into the battery cube.
