I was reading some BMW literature about the electric water pump used in the 535i. They said that it helps the car reach operating temp faster (lets the heater work faster), because the water pump does not turn on until the engine temp exceeds XX value. This all makes sense, but doesn't seem to be any different than the old way of using a thermostat to open a valve to let the water flow through the system. Do these cars still have a thermostat? If so, why would you need one...if you have a temp sensor for the water and use it to start the water pump, why would you need a thermostat controlled valve to do the same thing? In my mind...the elimination of the mechanical theromstat would be a great thing...no more "stuck thermostat issues".
