I have searched and didn't find the answer.

My car has 74K and is burning oil. Maybe a quart every 1500 miles. It drives great but if I let it idle for 5 minutes or get stuck in traffic, especially on a hot day, there is going to be a very embarrassing cloud when I pull away.

I have gotten 3 diagnosis and they all point to valve seals. The question is: Do I replace the seals for $2700 or replace the seals and guides as well as have the heads machined for $5000. I found a good Indie that says the seals alone should last for 50K+, maybe much more.

I'm liking the $2700 but also like the $5000 "guaranteed fix". The quotations are meant to imply there is no guarantee.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Are you adding $2700 value to the car? That's quite a repair cost. Will you make back that money when you sell the car?

By the way, my 06 550i has the same issue, with 106k miles. I'm living with it for the moment.

Sorry to hear. That sucks and shouldn't happen on a BMW.

Just curious, do you know the oil change intervals on the car? Assume you are not the first owner.

It depends on how you look at it. As it sits it is basically unsellable or maybe $6-7000 to the right person. If I spend $2500 it should esasily bring $15000. So I guess it does add value.
Thanks for responding

Oil was changed at 15K until I got it 15K ago. Then I change it every 7K. But I fear, the damage was done by then

I could live with it if it were my commuter car. It still drives and runs great. But I am in town mostly and I can't stand the embarrassment of the smoke cloud, it's big, after idling in traffic for 5 minutes.

you better check your oil level sensor!! My warrenty covered my fix from this issue. It has cost the warrenty company almost 6000 to fix from the dealer dude! Good luck bra!

Interesting that you say this. My car (lesson learned, I know!) was a lemon-law buyback from California due to an oil leak, and BMW replaced this sensor and I have about 9 months remaining on the 1 year warranty of that repair. Now after buying the car, I found this smoking problem, which is likely why BMW had to buy back. Anyway, I guess I'll save up the money for the repair and get around to it when I get around to it. OTherwise, I love this car!
