Only the Gateway 500 - MOST version will work.

I just got my 520d (with professional radio) last week. New iDrive with buttons surround.
I can confirm - only the head unit is MP3 compatible. The manual even states that the CD changer is not MP3 compatible.
A pity the BMW sales literature didn't state this up front. No dealer knew the answer either.
The end result is you have to play MP3s on the head unit or invest in extra hardware. The good news is (at least for me this is true) you can write MP3s to DVD and get loads on. The head unit in my car (which also has business nav) recognises DVD. A real pain having to swap with the sat nav disc though.

I asked the dealer if the CDC could play MP3 and wa told it could...I asked the question here in August and was told that the software is capable of rceiving the MP3 and recognising it, but the hardare (i.e. th CDC) will not play MP3.
Surely there must be an aftermarket Alpine or or other CDC which plays MP3's which can be just plugged in?? Or is it that the OEM one is the only one that will work in th E60 and you cannot get an aftermarkt one to be recognised by the car?
Also - does anyone actually know if the prof Nav in th new 09MY E60 with the buttons has an HDD like the 3 series has?
