I am a total newb here so please be kind. :help:

I currently have a 4.8is and am completely happy with it. I was at the dealer the other day looking at a 650 just for the heck of it and came across a 545i with sport package and it seems just about every option but the HUD. It is CPO'd as well.
My question is, if I decide to go through with this, I'll end up with some cash in hand to mod with of course and maybe save a few bucks in gas, is there anything to pay particular attention to in the '05's?

I've been searching the forums and it seems like a good car to get, but in case I've missed something, I thought I'd ask.

Thanks in advance guys.

Nothing to worry about on the 545i's IMO unless you are concerned about playing MP3's. With a build date prior to 3/05, you are not likely to be able to play them.

id personally stay with the x5 , but do note that it wil be replaced in a years time so probably not the best choice if you are keen to resell at a good value

otherwise 05 545i are very reliable

Thanks guys, not too worried about the MP3's. As long as I have an AUX input for my iPOD, I should be OK. In the process of researching the 545, I've given myself another problem in deciding if I want to just go with the 550. On the other hand, vfengineering is coming out with their S/C kit around mid-year.
Oh the problems. :ermm:

Thanks again!

As an owner of an '05 X5 with the 4.4 and a '05 545, it's a no brainer (if you don't need the utility and the all wheel drive), get the 545.

But I'm confused. If you are considering a super charger, then price is not a huge obstacle and get an M5. Why mess with add ons, when you can get 500hp factory with a warranty?

I have to say that the '04 545 might not be as trouble free as you'd like.

But, actually reading the post one more time, the '05 seems to have much less problems.

I'm blaming it on the bourbon.

I'd keep the X5. I recently bought a used X5 for my wife and think its fantastic. We only have the 3.0 184hp diesel version but the way it drives and the quality feel would be enough for me to exchange my E60 for one.
Don't get me wrong I love my 535d but driving the X5 was a complete shock to the system. I know why they're so popular in the UK now! :D

Well, my girlfriend has a Tahoe (for now) so I wouldn't really be losing the utility. As for the AWD, I do live in Chicago but we really haven't had a bad winter. So I think winter tires on a 545 would be fine. If it gets bad, I take her truck or stay home.

As for the S/C, that would be down the road, we all get "used" to the power and will need more later. Besides, I'm not impressed with the torque numbers on the M5 and there's nowhere in Chicago to wind out that V10.

I also have an X5 4.4 and it drives like an E60 albeit a taller E60. I would keep the X especially if you live in an area where the Xdrive is necessary.
