Default Transmission Swap to newer automatic

I am curious if anyone has done a transmission swap to their E39. I am looking to upgrade to a newer 6/7 or 8 speed transmission, and I am curious what others have done. I have a lot of experience with Mopar transmissions and swapping in O/D transmissions into them, but I don't see a lot of conversation on doing the same with BMWs. Just curious to see what information is out there. I am not scared of reflashing or various levels of reprogramming. I am curious about what actually bolts together in order to increase performance and fuel mileage. Thanks!
