What type of electrical connection is available on E39 i.e. will K+DCAN cable work? And where is the connector i.e. under the bonnet/hood or in the cabin?

I know the E39 has a connector under the hood, is that OBD2 or OBD1? I don't have a E39, but planning to help a friend and need to figure out where the connector is and what type. My E60 OBD2 connector cable is K+DCAN and was wondering if that will work on the E39's.
