Hey guys!

Brand new here. As the title suggests I’m interested in a 540i my mate has. Basically is there anything I should be looking for or watching for? I’ve read a bit on them and seen bits and pieces but I’m sure there’s lads on here who know them inside out. I know with every car there’s common issues and I’ve read a big with these bushes and cooling etc but have heard some people on about vanos and timing chains.

It’s a 2000 540i SE Auto in good spec, sunroof, heated seats, parallels etc in individual Avus blue. The car is in very good shape no rust popping out and the interior seems to be in very good shape. The car has got 130k miles which is surprising considering how good a shape it’s in.

Anyways, I’m asking basically what I should do immediately if I got it or what I should be looking for when I go to look at it it thoroughly. My starter plan was a full major service, including gearbox etc as I’m quite meticulous with servicing. The 540i appeals to me as there isn’t many about and is something different from the usual stuff you see on the roads plus it’s a break from diesels! And of course it’s got 8 cylinders obviously 😆. Always loved the E39 but primarily looked at 530ds, but eh why not go for the V8 or should I be avoiding it like the plague lol. The car itself is completely standard with no mods. The main plan for the car is a summer weekend toy.

Note: Never owned a BMW, but drove a good few including the E39 530d, just seemed a bit underwhelming hence the look at the 540i.
