I got better mileage on my E39, but it was getting old, so repairs were starting to become more frequent. I erased 10 years when I got my '07 CPO, so repairs have been minimal, but gas mileage went from 28 to 23 mpg.

I think stress is a personal thing. I don't stress because I realize I made a choice when I bought this brand and certain obligations come with the territory. These cars aren't for everyone.

I would not but only agree 100% on this "I think stress is a personal thing. I don't stress because I realize I made a choice when I bought this brand and certain obligations come with the territory. These cars aren't for everyone." Learning it the hard way now as Indy's are getting ridiculous and $tealers cost $209 per hour

Not sure where you're located, but my indie charges $95/hour labor. And he doesn't mark up parts exorbitant either.

my 97 528 Auto gets right about 20 mpg and my 05 525 MT gets 24.7 i believe.
however my 528 reads 250 on the dash and the e60 says 120 so time will tell for me. i've replaced alot on the e39 so i know its a solid car.. or that i've replaced lol

The lastest model with the smallest motor will get the best gas mileage.

I get better mileage in my E60 (530xi) than I do in my E39 (525iT). We do about a 50/50 mix of city and highway and I'll get just under 500 miles on a tank in the E60 and 400 in the E39. Gas tank in the E60 is ~17.5 gallons and ~18 in the E39. OBC indicates about 27.5 average in the E60 and about 24.5 in the E39.

I haven't owned the E60 long enough to comment on maintenance costs (only a month). I've found that you really need to stay on top of maintenance in the E39, but it's a very easy car to work on. Take care of it and it'll take care of you.

Thank you bschmidt25. Have you changed the petrol filter on the E39? And is your 100 miles less mileage still the case after new filter?
