Hi.

I was driving back on the motorway yestreday when my LHD 2002 525 diesel auto Tourer (126k miles) started to cause me problems. The car would not rev above 3000 revs. Of course, on the flat in top gear this is not a problem as it relates to over 80mph. However, on the hills it would lose power and the max speed was around 50mph.

The dashboard has a fuel economy meter and I noticed that when I pushed the accelerator pedal down, as the revs got to 3000 rpm, the fuel consumption meter dropped to zero and I lost power. When I took my foot off the pedal, it would start to read again and some sort of power was regained. No smoke or warning lights came on. My logic tells me that fuel starvation could be the problem?

Anyway, I managed to limp home but now the car wont start at all. My 1st thoughts were the fuel pump in the fuel tank. So, I turned on the ignition and listened under the car by the fuel tank. I can hear a whirring, which stops after a minute. This is the fuel pump priming the system and correctly turning off after 1 minute. So I am assuming the pump is still working. How well it's working is of course, open to debate.

I next had a look at the fuel filter under the bonnet. I disconnected the clear flexi pipe and turned the ignition on again. If everything is Ok I expected to see fuel pumping/spurting out of it (or the filter?) as the system tries to prime itself. However, nothing really much happened.

So, I suspect that either the pump is not pumping, although the noise makes me think otherwise or there's a blockage? I have seen elsewhere that there is another pump/filter underneath the car, but not sure if this applies to my car or not. Also, not sure where I would find it?

Any help, advice or further info appreciated as the car is off the road at the moment and wont start. HELP!!!!!
