Are ZF's 5HP-18 transmissions for E39s and E36s different from the ones for an E34?

Are ZF's 5HP-18 transmissions for E39s and E36s different from the ones for an E34?
Gents,
I need your help. My dad owns a '92 525i and the transmission, although only has 102,000 km gave up. I'm looking for a replacement ZF 5HP-18 for his car (M50B25), but have only seen some of the same transmissions but for E36s and E39s. I was wondering if the one from a US-spec E36 M3 can work, or if the one from an E39 520i (with Steptronic) can be installed with the current computer module that's in the 525i.
Just as well if you know where I can find one in really decent shape let me know. I'll be very grateful.
