Need help with replacing key!

Help ! I am brand new to this site and not very techy when it comes to this so please bear with me. I have a 1995 BMW 540i 6-spd, Great machine just spent a bundle on new glass mouldings and paint!! Just got it home and immediately lost the only key !!!! And everything locked inside,,...I did manage to get the VIN thru my insurance company so now on a quest to order a new key.... Problem: I live in Canada and as far as I can tell the car only registered in the USA. ( I found that out when I needed the radio code, got it from a dealer in Nevada. Can anyone offer some advice on getting a replacement key please???

Would really appreciate some advice..

Thanks,

I would take the vin number in to my local dealer and have them work up a key

There is a chance that over time the ignition key may have been replaced with another - would normally be the same key but different strokes for different folks

Contact BMW NA if dealer is unwilling to help, and do not return to them ever

You might end up having to rekey the entire car - contact a local locksmith for what that will cost

I did all my E21s to the same key for about $200 - 3 cars, ignition, doors and trunk
Changing ignition keys is a PITA - AMHIK

Source the stock keep first from dealer or BMW NA - if that key doesn't work rekey the entire car to it

YMMV

You must contact a local locksmith that can help you in re-keying. Cost will be decent as compared to dealer , as it has personally experienced by me.

Great thought first ask the dealer for it and if the dealer is not willing to do it . Then go for locksmith which is the second option, they probably do it at some decent cost.

I will go for locksmith because according to my budget they are the best.

Replacement can be done both by dealers and locksmith. It's your choice from where you want to get it replaced.

Most reliable way is to have the vin number and get it replaced by an expert who offer locksmith services.
