My car is out of warranty so I wanna do an oil n filter change myself...Castle BMW in York UK want ?220.00.
I bought a Mahle filter form ebay...?9.99 and Mobil 1 oil fully synthetic 8 litres 5w30 (LL04 BMW spec according to the label).....?74.00.

I have a few questions

1) Where is the oil filter housing....any pics? Do I need a ramp/jack to get to it? I believe you do on the M5...but not sure on my 2005 M57 engine 525d.
2) Is Mahle filter any good? What is the BMW OEM filter?
3) Halfords do the same grade oil 10 litres fully synthetic 5w30 for ?70.00....any experience with this?
3) Should I drain the sump or use one of those convenient vacuum pumps and hose out the oil through the dip stick? Will I get all the oil out (8.3 litres I believe)?
4) Should I use an engine oil flush proir to drainage?

Thanks guys

Kaz

Filter is on right side of engine cover/from top, easy to get to.You will need a 30 something socket to unscrew top and pullout the element.
Mahle filter will be fine.
I used Fuchs Titan GT1 from german & swedish ?70 for 8 liters.
DO NOT USE OIL FLUSH!
Drain oil from sump plug.(access from triangular hatch below) 8 liters of oil will come out!
vacuum pumps are ideal for penis enlargement (I hear) but you'll never get every last dropof oil/any swarf etc.
Hope this helps.

You need a 32mm socket (six side preferably because the oil filter nut is plastic). Put some rags around the filter so you don't drop oil on to the alternator.

Filter should come with a new sump plug washer.

The genuine filter is paper and I doubt much different from any other make.

The oil filter and sump plug should be torqued to 25Nm. The sump plug is the obvious nut on the bottom of the sump and I think it's 17mm.

Oh and regarding the oil, I reckon any 5W30 fully synthetic that meets B4 spec should be fine. You need the B4 spec if you have a diesel particulate filter, if the oil is only B3 it will produce too much ash and may clog the filter.

If you're using the full service interval then you definitely need longlife oil. If you change the oil a bit more often (pretty good idea if you want the engine and turbo to last) then you don't have to have longlife.

Kaz,
I would take to kwik fit if you haven't already done it.
I was quoted ?45 for oil and filter change. and thats for 8l. They even said they would order in the Mobil 1 i requested. LLo4.
I was going to order filter from BMW garage. In which case they would knock off a few quid. Thats cheap compared to ?200 quid.

cheers Adam,

Thats a great quote. Will give them a call to investigate...but a bit sceptical cos 4 litres of Mobil 1 5w30 (LL04 spec) costs about ?37.00. Did you actually have this done at this price?
