Sunroof seal replacement - any DIY?
#11
Please take pictures of the install as I'll likely be doing this one myself.
I've yet to convince the dealer that this is an issue. Seems damn near every BMW they have in the lot has this issue

Slide the sunroof open to expose the seal. The split in the seal is marked on the photo below.
The split was nicely cut at an angle on mine...
Just grab the end of the seal and pull it off. All around.
The new seal came like this:
Part number (somewhere here someone said there was a new seal, don't think this one is it as the rubber actually already felt a little aged!).
Clean the roof opening for the new seal (I used alcohol), then simply stick the new seal on. Don't pull on the seal, just gently press it to the roof. As the ends meet you cut it. I didn't do the fancy angled cut as above but just cut it straight.
Use a roller of some kind to press it hard against the roof, then you're done! Close the sunroof and make sure it all looks ok. Due to the increased resistance of the fresh seal you may have to recalibrate the sunroof. The pdf mentioned earlier in this thread tells you how. Voila!
It actually helped! The cabin is much quieter now, no discernible difference with the sliding cover open or closed!
I poured some water over it too just to make sure there was no leak, and it seems I got lucky!

Hey guys, I replaced mine today, it was a breeze.
I saw on the PDF that I wasn't suppose to take off the extra glue that resides on the roof when the old seal comes off. I don't think that's right, I think I read it wrong. Nonetheless I did leave it on, cleaned it, put the new seal on and have no issues.
BTW sound difference is incredible. Tomorrow I am putting some vaseline on the door rubbers to help them out a bit and see how quiet I can get her. It's a bit upsetting that my 5 Series is louder that my C-Class Benz when I had that car.
