I bought my 2007 530xi in February and it has been my first vehicle that I have had work done at the dealership. My wallet has not been enjoying dealer prices. I just had an oil change done from my old VW mechanic to save $50 and he did not know how to reset the computer. Now I do and it worked flawlessly. At first I did not hit the start engine button, but it did goto some odd codes. I re-read post and when I pushed the button it worked super smooth. I love the internet and all the cool tricks and info you can learn. I will check back with the forums when other things arise.
I am so loving my wagon, I had a Passat v6 GLX before, but it was causing back problems. Since I switched cars no back pain and still driving a few thousand miles per month. BMW wagon has been a dream car for some time now. Mine is black with the brown/black leather and seems to have quite a few options. A definite upgrade from what I was driving and an increase in mpg as well as comfort!

Right, I'll try and explain in detail what I did and what I saw when I was doing the Brake Fluid reset. Forgive me if the instructions seem patronising in any way but here goes:
Firstly with the ignition switched on, set the odometer trip meter back to zero by pushing it once. Then switch the ignition back off again. (I found this step was critical, otherwise I couldn't get to the "Service" menu).
Now you are ready to go through the reset steps as follows:
1. Switch the ignition on (so that the battery, Oil and Parking brake lights are displayed) and the key is ready to start the engine - but don't actually start the car.
2. Press the odometer reset button for between 5 and 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the centre appears in the top window between the clocks (where the outside temperature / time or date normally appears) - this is the "Service" icon.
3. Release the odometer button briefly and press again straight away which brings up a picture of the Brake Fluid symbol (same as the one that the i-drive shows when you look at the Service menu).
4. If you want to reset the Brake Fluid interval for another 2 years then keep holding the odometer button until the word "RESET?" appears at the bottom of the lower window.
5. Release the button briefly and push it in again and hold for about 5 - 10 seconds until the new date appears in the bottom window. You can then switch the ignition off and the new Brake Fluid date will appear in the service menu on the i-drive screen next time you switch on.
6. If you want to reset the Oil, Microfilter or Brake Pad indicators then you will need to follow the same sequence as steps 1 and 2 above, but when you get to step 3 and the brake Fluid icon appears, just release the button and press again and the next service item will appear.
7. You can continue releasing and pressing the button until the required service item icon appears for the one you want to reset. As soon as it does then hold in the button in until the word "RESET?" appears again as in step 4 above. Once the word "RESET?" has appeared, you need to release the button briefly and hold it in again for about 5 - 10 seconds until it is replaced by the new service interval figure (as per step 5 above).
Hints & Tips
Before actually resetting anything, go through steps 1, 2 and 6 above until you are familiar (and sure) what you want to reset. Practice this a few times and note down in what order the icons appear after the initial "Service" icon appears.
If you do happen to hold the button down too long against an item you don't want to reset and the "RESET?" appears, just leave the button alone for 10 seconds or so and it will not let you reset the item. (Alternatively just switch the ignition off and start again).
Sometimes if you have not released and pressed the button again quickly enough, when you hold it down again the German technical writing will appear after about 15 - 20 seconds instead of the Service item icon you were expecting. (If this happens just switch off the ignition and start again).

Awesome stuff.....
I got a reset for the front brake pads of my 06 523 push button type. 1 thing to add......I did it a few times and found out I had to close the doors to get it to work.

My Ride: BMW 525
hi, so i changed the oil in my 08 535i and have a quick question. i wasn't due for an oil change (3100 miles left) so the message didn't come on so when i try to reset it, it won't let me. i held the check button down until the yellow triangle came up but when i let it go it went back to the time/date. i'm familiar with resetting the lights, i reset my brake pad light last month but it won't let me do this. could it be because it technically doesn't see a problem?

This was a great tip! My local indy Euro repair guy had no idea how to reset the oil warning. Now it's all good. Many thanks (if you're still around.... it's only been about seven years since the original post).

I would just like to add a bit to Kev525's procedure which is all good, however what I found is that if you hold the reset button in for too long on the initial press you get up the indecipherable numbers and letters that someone else referred to as German text. So, bottom line is experiment holding the button, if for too short a time means it reverts to normal display when you let go, too long and the odd text BUT in between, as Kev525 indicates (about 7 seconds) you get the correct oil can display come up and then you can go through his procedure and it works. No messing about with doors open or shut, no seat belt done up etc..
Prior to this I had 4 different OBD readers try to reset it without success including professional expensive Snap On and Bosch reader/diagnostic tools. By the way mine was reading Oil Service 3,800 miles overdue as I could not reset the indicator (I always do an oil change each year or at 10,000 mile intervals). So I believe a dealer saying you cannot reset the indicator when it has gone in the red is incorrect. - For info I am talking about a 2009 E61 530d.
