I had the same code come on "increased emissions" on my 2004 545i with a little over 84k miles on it. Checked it with my OBDC II code reader and it said it was the thermostat. Picked it up at the dealer for $110. Replacement was straight forward. Refilled with new coolant and the code has not come back. Mine was stuck open too. I would have never guessed that this error code would mean the thermostat was bad. Thanks to this forum for all the great help on these cars. You guys know these cars better than the dealers do.

"Increased Emissions" is most likely that you are running lean or rich and has to do with gas or air/fuel ratio. have the codes read, jot them down.

As far as a on 04 530 or an 05 525 it is very easy on the M54 engine, same as M52. THis is easily searchable.

Default Did it!

Thanks to all those who posted about this. I was a bit apprehensive to change this myself. I too was getting the same increased emissions warning. My Indy shop guy wanted $350 inc. the parts to change it out. Although not a bad price, I was able to get the T-Stat and coolant for $80 and do the swap in appx an hour. A little tight for the bolt closest to the engine but a swivel head stubby ratchet, various sizes of extensions, and a 10mm socket took care of the job easily.

Once again, thanks to the prior posters who said this was easy and gave me the courage to tackle the job myself.
