Thanks folks, I've been checking some local repair shops just for labor on these jobs. Nobody will touch it because they are being told that every is needing to be "coded", which can be done only at dealers. I can almost believe that, especially about the power steering pump, since I have active steering.

I'm curious as to how the vacuum pump will cause a rough idle, seeing as it only powers the brake booster.

While there's probably little doubt that the dealer is taking you for a ride here, this is a preview into what life will be like for out of warranty E60s. All those toys and technology are wonderful to own while the warranty is still in force, but at some point you're on your own...

Anyway - good luck getting this stuff fixed. I'm surprised you can't find a good indy to do the work (or at a minimum an indy who has buddies with the right tools and toys at the dealership )

indy shop would be your best bet, dealers are just too much $$$

That depends on how much your dealership is willing to go to bat for you with BMW. I just had roughly $9k in repairs done at my dealership for a total out of pocket of $2.2k (and yes, the power steering pump was one of the repairs). My car was 2 years and 15k miles out of warranty but they still got BMW to pay for all of the parts plus some of the labor. I was about to go to an indie for repairs but found out that it was way cheaper at the dealer. FWIW, your results may vary...

Thanks for all the input. I've tried to get quotes from a couple of our local indy folks and they won't touch because of the codeing issue, plus they can't really do much on the parts side of the house. I do drive the hell out of my car and it's served me well, at 150K it's still the best car I've ever owned.

Can i ask what the other work entailed? Also, why was the pump replaced? Was it leaking? Or codes for the active steering?

Swope is a Joke. Try Don Black or Stein.
I concur...don't go to Swope unless it is under "FULL WARRANTY"!

Have you tried Stein on Shelbyville Road? They know what they are doing and can get the parts without any problems.

Good luck!
