I have posted this information elsewhere in the forums but I think it will be of use to owners who do their own servicing, especially in locations where BMW
LL-04 oil is specified.
I'm a new member so excuse me if this information has already been covered.I have a 2007 530d M Sport Le Mans Edition,I have changed the oil and filter twice.I chose a BMW approved oil,Q8 Formula Special 5W-30 (BMW LL-04),it can be purchased in 25L drums (enough for 3 oil changes)at around half the price of Mobil or Castrol!I get it from Brobot Petroleum in the UK,delivered to my door.Although I have used BMW filters at ?18 each,I have stocked up on Mahle OX177/3D which are identical and half the price!
After the first oil change I paid my dealer to reset the oil service warning as I was informed that it could only be done by connection to the diagnostics computer.THIS IS NOT TRUE.Having changed both Cabin filters (Mahle LAK197/s, ?29 for 2),I had service overdue warnings for oil and microfilter so I searched this forum for reset information but it was not clear if this worked for the start button models.
I decided it was worth a try and within 10 minutes both were reset.
Am I glad that I registered!

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

Is BMW LL-04 oil recommended for diesel engines only?

I ask because I know for my car, it's recommended to get BMW LL-01/ACEA A3 oil.....come to think of it, I have never heard/seen BMW LL-04 oil

BMW LL-04 is the specification for both diesel and petrol engines in countries where the vehicles meet Euro IV emissions requirements. It has superseded LL-01.
I recall reading somewhere that it is also linked to fuel specifications, for example diesel fuel has to have a low sulphur content.
