I just read a thread on BimmerForums about using other than BMW engine oil. It is a very technical thread that explains the differences in oil ratings and which apply to BMW engines. Since I was in the market for engine oil, I spent the time to follow thread and really changed my choice in oils. I ended up ordering Lubro Moly from BavAuto. But there are other brands that also satisfy the ratings recommended by BMW.

I always enjoy the angst over the choice of engine oils for their cars. Bottom line is your major oils are all excellent quality and most people do not keep their car long enough to warrant the hand wringing. Buy the right weight from a quality company; Pennzoil, ExxonMobil, etc etc and you will be just fine. If you have doubts get data by sending in oil samples for analysis.

i und the brands and marketing, im just wondering if most go with 5-30 syn. My 330i has the same recommendation, but when I do my own changes, I buy 0-40...i havent read many 550 owners going with this.

Interestingly, the oil cap in my 545i actually says "BMW recommends Castrol" or something like that. Odd that it doesn't say something like "Only use BWM branded oil from your local dealer for $19/quart".

yeah dont read into the castrol thing too much, im sure they paid some good $ for BMW to put that on there. Or it was a deal with their F1 team which runs Castrol as a sponsor
