I have what is probably a very stupid question. I'm trying to do my first oil change (car out of warranty) on a 2006 530xiT - took delivery 10/15/2005, it's the N52 255 hp engine. I got under the car and removed what looks like the only removable access panel - the sort of triangular one that seems directly under the line between the wheel centers - and the only thing there that looks like a drain plug is aimed straight down. The only reason I ask is - after hours of looking I've never seen or heard of a drain plug that faces straight down. I really don't want to drain the wrong fluid. Help will be appreciated.

There is a little removable panel on the sheet metal under the engine. As I recall it is held in place by three screws. Simply remove the little panel and the drain plug is right there. I've only done mine once since getting the car in January but think it a little bit left of center on the drivers side.
Good luck.
Good luck.

i'm not sure about your 530xi, but on the 550i, the drain plug points straight down.
i just checked realoem. i entered a random year 530xi since i dont know your cars age.
have a look at this. does your plug look like #2?

In that access panel, the drain plug is on the right side of the oil pan (facing right), it is small, (about 12mm if I remember), and both the pan and plug are silver(06' N52 engine) so you might not think it is the plug when you first see it.
